Mama Car
By Lucy Catchpole, illustrated by Karen George (Faber & Faber, 2024)
Loved ‘What Happened to You?’. Loved ‘You’re SO Amazing!’. Love ‘Mama Car’. I’m happy to say it’s a bestseller too, which is just so wonderful! Lucy and James Catchpole selflessly and humbly tell stories that reflect their own experiences as disabled people/parents/professionals in our world today. Lucy has partnered with Karen George once more to create a new fiction story - with recognisably Lucy and her husband James as mum and dad to the young child.
In ‘Mama Car’, the reader listens to the youngster telling them all about life in their family. Some readers may find comfort and familiarity with the everyday of having a parent who is wheelchair bound, or who needs their child to assist them from time to time - picking up harmful objects in their path, reaching for something, helping with carrying items. For others, this is an insight into different lives, a chance to learn about other lived experiences, to think differently.
This sweet family unit has expeditions and adventures both indoors and out - even familiar moments like falling from a bike can easily be remedied by feeling better all curled up on Mama’s lap where it’s all snuggly and safe.
I’ve already read this in my bookshop storytime sessions, and look forward to sharing it in school book clubs using the new teaching resources that accompany the book. You can download them here:
