The Tantrum: A book about MELTDOWNS and bawling bards!’… is the latest in bestselling ‘Loki’ series author, Louie Stowell’s picture book series of ‘Shakesbearean Tales’. The first book was the charming ‘A Midsummer Night's Drama : A book at bedtime for little bards!’, which published earlier this year especially poignant for for those of our young ones who get a bit over-excited or wound up before bed.

Excitedly it’s Shakespeare’s The Tempest that gets a Stowell-style makeover for the second in the series, and it is beautifully illustrated by Isobel Lundie with a really cosy autumnal seasonal feel. In this new story, poor old Bill the bear (i.e. William) has a bit of an embarrassing moment when he falls off the stage at rehearsals, then has a tantrum, then is pretty difficult with his rather lovely caring friends… as all great friends do they find a way to help their much-loved member of their troupe to feel himself again, for… the show much go on… and it was a wonderful night for the excitement of ‘The Tempest’ at the Glade in the end.

A fantastic series to introduce children to the world of theatre, plays, period costume, even the structure of plays with Acts.

Turning famous Shakespearean tales into relatable stories is fun and accessible learning! There’s a lovely double spread at the back of the book with some high-level biographical details about William Shakespeare, The Tempest and some fun words and phrases to discuss together too. I wonder what’s next in the series… my favourite has to be ‘Twelfth Night’!! What about you?
